Women's Education Initiative offers a new scholarship in the Philippines

Youngest of seven to study
in Tangub City

June 2015
Thanks to your generous donations, Women's Education Initiative (formerly Isis Initiative, Inc.) was able to offer a four-year scholarship to another student in the Philippines. Leah Mahmot found Mary Joy and recommended her for the scholarship.

About the student:
Mary Joy Braggan Supang. She's 18 years old and graduated high school last March. She has 7 siblings and she's the seventh child. Leah says Mary Joy is eager to get an education in college and will study office administration.

She will be studying at Governor Alfonso D. Tan College in Tangub City, where Leah’s brother Benjie is studying. Because it’s close to Leah, she can help Mary Joy. Isis Initiative Inc. will pay Mary Joy’s tuition fees, and she and her mother will cover the boarding. The tuition is about U.S. $450, and we can pay for her four years at about $2,000.

Grant will help student complete her master's in Gender and Peace Building

Feb. 14, 2015
Women's Education Initiative (formerly Isis Initiative, Inc.)  is proud to offer financial support to Azmina Karim to complete her final semester of studies for a Master of Arts in Gender and Peace Building at the University for Peace in Costa Rica.

"I have been always passionate about working towards bringing about positive change on women's status in Bangladesh, hence to strive my passion I have recently taken a step forward and been enrolled at the University for Peace, a United Nations mandated university in Costa Rica. I am enrolled in the Master of Arts degree program on Gender and Peace Building. I will graduate from here in June 2015.

I have graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies in 2013 from Asian University for Women. After graduation, I have worked as a volunteer teacher at Minmahaw school, supported by a grant from Connecther. I taught filmmaking to migrant Burmese students at a school in western Thailand, on the border with Myanmar. There I helped young refugees, a marginalized group who rarely have their voices heard, make films, some based on interviews with young girls who had been sex trafficked along the Thai-Burma border. My short film Because I Am a Girl, a powerful indictment of domestic violence in Bangladesh, won the People's Choice Award at Connecther's Girls Impact the World Film Festival 2013.

The following year, to further her efforts to bring about positive change in the world, I have worked as a research study coordinator for a project,at the Asian University for Women, which focused on the effects of women's education and employment on gender relations in the family in South and Southeast Asia, a project funded by the Ford Foundation until July 2014. After this masters program, my future plan is work on a project in collaboration with an NGO focused on expanding opportunities and funding for higher education for female students in my community, my country and across Asia.
